FIELD: image encoding.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to image encoding means. First target block is divided into first sub-blocks. Second target block, which is one of the first sub-blocks, is broken down into the second sub-blocks. First partition information for the first target block and multiple partitioning tree (MPT) split information for the second target block are generated and encoded. MPT split information includes an MPT split flag, MPT split direction information and MPT split type information for a second target block. MPT split flag indicates whether the second target block is split into second sub-blocks, which are non-square blocks. MPT split direction information reports on the splitting direction of the second target block. MPT split type information reports on the number of second sub-blocks into which the second target block is split. If the size of the second target block is 2N×2N, number of second subunits is equal to 3 and direction of splitting of second target unit is vertical direction, second target block is divided into a second sub-block of size N×2N and into second subunits with size N/2×2N.
