FIELD: processing of materials by cutting.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in the processing of surfaces with milling tools. The cutting insert for turning has two opposite main surfaces and a peripheral surface extending between them, and N side surfaces, with 2<N<9. The insert has mirror symmetry about the median plane and 360/N-degree axial symmetry about the central axis perpendicular to the median plane, and also contains two main edges, each of which has N main cutting edges and N corner cutting edges. Each of the main cutting edges has two overlying sections of the cutting edge and an underlying section of the cutting edge. Each of the main surfaces has N main front surfaces and N corner front surfaces and at least N convex insulated projections and N at least partially convex partially insulated projections.
EFFECT: improves the quality of the processed surface.
