FIELD: processing a multimedia stream.

SUBSTANCE: result is achieved by receiving a multimedia stream packetized in accordance with a given transport format, wherein the packetized multimedia stream comprises a plurality of hierarchical fields associated with a corresponding field type identifier, and wherein the plurality of fields comprise one or more track fields referencing corresponding tracks indicating multimedia components of the media stream; determining whether the media stream contains a preselection-related field of a given type indicating the preselection, wherein the preselection corresponds to presenting the media to the user; and if it is determined that the multimedia stream contains a preselection associated field: analysing metadata information corresponding to the preselection associated field, wherein the metadata information indicates preselection characteristics; identifying one or more tracks in the packetized media stream contributing to the preselection based on the metadata information; and providing one or more paths for subsequent processing in accordance with said preliminary selection.

EFFECT: providing efficient determination and subsequent signalling of tracks in a multimedia stream, which are configured to contribute to a specific preselection, thereby providing further suitable subsequent processing of such contributing tracks.
