FIELD: agriculture, in particular, potato growing, may be used for determining keeping properties of new sorts or sectioned potato samples, or tuber keeping properties during storage. SUBSTANCE: method involves determining free proline in top buds of stored potato tubers of sorts under test (or selected samples) and of sort-classifier during deep rest period; calculating rest depth coefficients by concentration ratio of free proline in top buds of test sorts and of sort-classifier; considering rest depth and keeping properties of potato tubers on the basis of these coefficients. EFFECT: enhanced reliability and objectivity in test results and provision for obtaining precise data on potato tuber rest depth and keeping properties. 1 tbl
