FIELD: agriculture, in particular, plant growing. SUBSTANCE: method involves determining extent of accumulation of free proline in leaves of ten-day aged sprouts exposed to water stress, said free proline accumulation extent being expressed in the form of index of stability; separating in the process of evaluation three groups of cultures: high stability group with index of stability of at least 4.1, average stability group with said index within the range of 2.0-4.0, and low stability group with said index of 1.9 and less than this value. EFFECT: increased efficiency and precise evaluation of field crops water stress resistance.
